Getting started

This blog was born out of a desire to share what I’ve learned. Friends, being a mom- a working mom, a single mom, a married mom, a student-mom, a stay-at-home mom, and every possible combination of those- is pretty stinking hard. Honestly, being a person is pretty stinking hard. There’s so much adversity out there. I like to think that everyone’s life is hard…we’re all fighting battles beneath the surface, and all our struggles are different. It’s my belief that the vast majority of us are all trying to do the best we can with what we’ve got.

Well, for me, when the going gets tough, the tough go to the internet! Except that going to the internet looking for solutions to problems is like drinking from a fire hydrant. And drinking from a fire hydrant at 3 in the morning when your baby won’t stop crying is not exactly my all-time fave. I’ve had some tough times over the last decade. My baby was diagnosed with autism. I had two kids before I graduated college. I had to work multiple jobs to get through school. And I worked more than 50 hours a week as a single mom after graduating, with no family close by to help me. What did help was kind words from friends, strangers, and other moms, who weren’t afraid to give me advice, even when I probably gave them evil looks and was more prickly in demeanor than I am today 🙂

So here I am. My parenting style, my approach to marriage, my approach to myself, have all evolved over the last decade. We are who we are because of where we’ve been. Hopefully some of what I share makes sense for you- maybe it lets you skip a few of the hurdles I’ve jumped in the last decade. Maybe you’re inspired to cook more for your family, or develop a right-for-you method to organizing your life, or save money by making simple shortcuts. Or maybe you’ll think I’m a crazy person with no right to give any advice whatsoever- it’s all good people. I can deal.

Stay tuned for what’s in store. I can’t promise it will always be exciting, and I can’t promise that what I post will reflect the person I am in 5 years. But I can promise that you’ll share in some fun times (or at least, I’ll have some fun times- you can decide if you think they’re fun or not for yourself), and I’m happy to have you along for the ride.
